The Société Honoraire de Français began in 1949 under the auspices of the American Association of Teachers of French "to stimulate interest in the study of French, to promote high standards of scholarship, to reward scholastic achievements, to create enthusiasm for and an understanding of francophone culture [and] civilization, to promote and perpetuate international friendship, and to reward efforts toward furthering solidarity in the French-speaking world." -SHF Constitution (1999)
The establishment of a chapter of the Société Honoraire de Français offers several potential benefits to a secondary French program. First, it provides an opportunity to recognize outstanding scholarship in the study of French language through selection for membership, the placement of a special seal on the graduate's diploma, the wearing of a white cord at graduation, and the right to wear the official emblem/pin of the honor society. Second, the chapter provides a vehicle for focusing activities around French language and literature and also for encouraging member participation in the annual writing contest as well as application for the annual travel grants. In addition, there is the opportunity for students to experience leadership in serving as officers, directing the initiation ceremony, and/or leading other chapter events.

ALLEZ LES RAIDERS! (GO RAIDERS!)
Our Chapter of the National French Honor Society here at East Carter High School has existed since 2009. Our initial charter was submitted by Monsieur Ben Hawkins and approved by the American Association of Teachers of French (AATF) in January that same year. Since that time, the East Carter Chapter has worked tirelessly to promote the study and appreciation of French language and culture to the student body of East Carter High School as well as the community at large through yearly outreach activities and celebrations. For more information on all of our activities, please click on the tab above for "Events & Activities" and be sure to check this website or you can follow us on Twitter (@SHFeastcarter) in order to know when and where these activities will be happening throughout the school year!
